YOGA AS MEDICINE LEVEL 2: YOGA THERAPY FOR THE NERVOUS SYSTEM WITH DR. TIMOTHY MCCALL
Join Dr. Timothy McCall, board certified physician, medical editor of Yoga Journal, yoga therapist and creator of this special Yoga As Medicine training. Attendees of the workshop are encouraged, though not required to take the YAM Level 1 training.
Yoga As Medicine trainings are medically and scientifically informed while remaining true to the heart of Yoga and Ayurveda. They use a personalized therapeutic approach based on an in-depth evaluation of five categories, using the acronym SNAPS: Structural, Nervous System, Ayurveda, Psychology and Spirituality. This holistic roadmap allows for a systematic assessment of function on all levels of body, mind and spirit. YAM uses the full palette of yogic tools including asana, pranayama, meditation and philosophy as well as dietary and lifestyle advice.
Yoga As Medicine (YAM) seminars are hands-on, roll-up-your sleeves workshops, six hours per day, with much of the time spent doing yoga therapy in small groups under Timothy’s supervision. Learn to observe bodies, study breathing patterns, analyze doshas and tailor personalized practices and lifestyle advice.
Past attendees have included healers, health care professionals, yoga students and teachers, and those seeking yoga therapy for such conditions as back pain, cancer, arthritis, heart problems, Parkinson’s disease, anxiety and depression.
Due to its strong connection to the autonomic nervous system (ANS), there will be a major focus on the breath, both as a contributor to nervous system maladies when it is dysfunctional, and its use to help heal such conditions. Lectures will focus on topics related to the nervous system including its role in autoimmune diseases like MS and Parkinson’s. We’ll also explore the role of yoga in trauma and PTSD, which can transform a previously normal nervous system into one that overreacts to perceived threats. Case work will explore how asana, pranayama, restoratives, meditation, yoga nidra and other yogic techniques can help re-pattern abnormal stress responses, both over- and under-activity, common among those with everything from anxiety and depression to insomnia, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and autoimmune conditions.
In our yoga practices, we will work to move progressively more deeply into profound relaxation of the nervous system. This will build over the course of the five days, and we hope out into your personal yoga practices in the weeks and months after the training!

about your teacher
Timothy McCall, MD
Timothy McCall, MD is a board-certified physician specializing in internal medicine, and the author of two books, Examining Your Doctor: A Patient’s Guide to Avoiding Harmful Medical Care (Citadel Press) and Yoga as Medicine: The Yogic Prescription for Health and Healing (Bantam). He is co-editor of a medical textbook on yoga therapy, the first of its kind, The Principles and Practice of Yoga in Health Care.
He practiced medicine for more than 10 years in the Boston area before devoting himself full-time to investigating and teaching yoga therapy. He is the Founder/Director of Yoga As Medicine Seminars and Teacher Trainings and, until recently, co-directed a yoga therapy center just outside of New York City.
Timothy has traveled extensively, studying with many of the world’s leading yoga teachers and yoga therapists including BKS Iyengar and TKV Desikachar. His primary teachers have been Patricia Walden, Rod Stryker and Donald Moyer. He has practiced yoga and meditation from various traditions for over 20 years and Tantra for more than a decade. Since 2005, he has studied with a traditional Ayurvedic doctor, Chandukutty Vaidyar, and has spent more than a year at his clinic in Kerala, India. Read more about dr McCall here.
