By the Light of Sun & Moon Salutations: Stories, Philosophy & Practice of Hatha Yoga with Libby Cox

Friday, June 21 - Sunday, June 23
at Westgate

Join Libby Cox, E-RYT 500, alumni faculty of Yoga Yoga Teacher Training, and director of Two Birds Yoga Training in Eugene, Oregon, for a weekend of conversation and practice. This course will focus on a common idea that the word Hatha has dual qualities: Sun and Moon. We’ll look at the origins of this narrative, and address them in the practices of Chandra Namaskara (Moon Salutation,) and meditation, through the lenses of yoga practice, mythology & philosophy.

Friday, June 21
6:00 - 8:30pm

Join Libby for an evening of posture practice and meditation followed by a brief discussion of disciplined, “moon-oriented” yoga.

Cost $35 ($45 after April 21)

Saturday, June 22
12:00 - 6:00pm

Saturday will be a conversation and practice around the following questions: What does the word Hatha truly mean? Is it merely the sun & moon? Why so many Sun Salutations? What is a Moon Salutation? Why is it essential to practice Moon Salutation alongside Sun Salutations? Learn more about these celestial bodies through stories and history that weave into Modern Postural Yoga Practice.

This day, we’ll start with a conversation, continue into a led Hatha Yoga practice, and then breakdown sequencing sun and moon salutations with pranayama in asana practice. Appropriate for Yoga Teachers looking to deepen their understanding as well as all students seeking to develop a sustainable home practice.

Cost $130 ($140 after April 21)

Sunday, June 23
12:00 - 6:00pm

Sunday’s class will start with an extended Chandra Namaskara practice. We’ll spend the rest of the afternoon talking about the stories of these celestial bodies through yoga mythology, history and yoga anatomy (think nadis). There will be practice and discussion of pranayama, meditation, and mantra in conjunction with the natural world, and with the Moon and Sun. We’ll learn more about how to weave these ideas fluidly and approachably into Modern Postural Yoga Practice.

In this course, you will:

  • Learn to practice and to teach different Moon and Sun Salutation sequences
  • Learn physiological benefits of Moon Salutation
  • Look at the poetry of Sanskrit terms related to the definition of Hatha yoga: referencing philosophical, practical and textual sources
  • Practice and teach meditations using breathwork, visualizations and mantra meditations, to balance lunar and solar energies, utilizing the concept of Prana in Yoga, shaping a healthy, well-rounded energetic practice.

Cost $130 ($140 after April 21)

About LIBBY COX

Libby Cox is an E-RYT 500, a mother of twin boys, an educator and a dedicated student of the body. With an 18-year yoga practice, a penchant for storytelling and a contagious sense of humor, Libby's teaching approach is passionate, compassionate, and witty.

Teaching yoga since 2004, Libby has served on the faculty in yoga teacher training programs in the USA and abroad since 2010, drawing upon her studies from numerous styles of yoga and teaching approaches to meet the needs of yoga students and aspiring teachers alike. Most notable are Libby's studies with Patty Townsend, Judith Lasater, and Douglas Brooks.

Townsend developed 'Embodyoga', an approach to movement steeped in anatomy-driven, developmental movement principles of Body-Mind Centering (BMC). Libby uses these principles to help students discover and release the underlying causes of dysfunctional movement patterns. Libby's studies with Judith Lasater have given her the skills to work individually with students on the shoulder, hip and lower back health. Dr. Douglas Brooks introduced her to Rajanaka Tantra, a body of ideas that emphasize the invaluable education of everyday human experience.

Libby works with students, using the vision of yoga philosophy, and helps them gain perspective and radical presence through life's joys and challenges. She recognizes that to be a knowledgeable instructor one must try to understand the world of yoga as a whole and not be closed off to any yoga experience, knowledge or practice. This combination of studies has sustained Libby's longtime love for connecting exploration of body-mind and breath to well-informed, creative movement. She appreciates the support and inspiration that grows out of yoga community and seeks to share her love of yoga as a philosophy that nourishes the capacity for creativity and resilience.

Libby lives in Eugene, Oregon teaches for Balanced Hot Yoga, and is the director of Two Birds Yoga Training. She lived in Austin, TX, for the better part of 15 years, and is a teacher trainer and national presenter for Yoga Yoga.
