ASHTANGA YOGA AUSTIN

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga is a challenging lineage of Hatha Yoga focused on building strength and endurance that naturally leads to a relaxed mental state. This dynamic sequence of postures, known as the Primary Series, combines focus with continuous movement. Ashtanga is practiced in a warm room (78-84 degrees).

The six series of K. Pattabhi Jois’ ashtanga yoga are an influential and widely known form of vinyasa yoga. Jois’s teacher, Krishnamacharya, believed the vinyasa approach was central to the transformative process of yoga. Mysore is the city in India where Pattabhi Jois started his yoga school and so our “Mysore” classes are named after that city.

The term ashtanga comes from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and refers to classical yoga’s eight (ashta)-limb (anga) practice. The eight limbs are restraint, observance, posture, breath control, sense withdrawal, concentration, meditative absorption and “enstasy.” This last word, which means “standing inside of,” is a translation of samadhi, which literally means to “put together” or “bring into harmony.”

ASHTANGA

Ashtanga is a challenging lineage of Hatha Yoga focused on building strength and endurance leading to a naturally relaxed mental state. In a warm room (78-84 degrees), a dynamic sequence of postures-the Primary Series- combines focus with continuous movement. Expect no postures to be omitted in these classes and expect class to last 90 minutes.

Fundamentals of Ashtanga incorporates about half of the Primary Series postures, allowing for a comfortable introduction to Ashtanga or an opportunity for regular Ashtanga students to focus on details. Familiarity with basic yoga postures highly suggested
