Yoga Therapy FAQ

What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy is the art and science of applying the tools and teachings of yoga and its sister science, Ayurveda, in order to “to create, stimulate, and maintain an optimum state of physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.” (Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D.) Yoga therapy is a highly individualized process. Therapists work one-on-one with an individual to address a specific health challenge or manage wellness goals. Often, conditions that can be treated through Yoga Therapy cannot be effectively managed in a public class setting.

A yoga therapy session differs from a standard private yoga session. Yoga therapy empowers individuals to transform their health and wellness through yoga asana, mindfulness and breathing practices, self-care tools and lifestyle changes, while a private yoga session targets a student’s asana practice goals.

What are the benefits of Yoga Therapy?

Yoga therapy can effectively address a wide range of structural, physiological and psychological challenges in a comprehensive and in-depth manner. Due to the holistic nature of its evaluation methods and of the remedies offered, yoga therapy excels at addressing multiple health concerns at the same time. Conditions which can benefit from yoga therapy include, but are not limited to:

  • Low-back and upper-back pain
  • Neck, shoulder and wrist pain
  • Disc injury, spinal conditions and scoliosis
  • Injury recovery and chronic pain
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Digestive disorders
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Insomnia
  • PTSD, trauma and grief recovery

I’ve never tried yoga before. Am I a good candidate for Yoga Therapy?

Absolutely! No previous yoga experience is necessary. Your therapist will tailor your practice to your specific needs based on your current level of experience and activity.

I already attend public classes. Would I benefit from Yoga Therapy?

Definitely! Anyone can benefit from the holistic life changes that Yoga Therapy offers. One or more Yoga Therapy sessions can be an effective complement to an existing yoga practice and can help gain more benefit from the classes you already attend.

Who offers Yoga Therapy at the Walk-In Clinic?
