Hatha Yoga Teacher Training (200-Hour Level Courses)

Required for Hatha Yoga 200-Hour Teacher Training Program

HY201 Orientation to Hatha Yoga Teacher Training (2 hours)
Required for students entering the Hatha Yoga Teacher Training program.

HY202 Introduction to Hatha Yoga (3 hours)
History, philosophy, and structure of Hatha Yoga. Overview of the major Hatha Yoga traditions in the West.

HY203 Asanas: Sun Salutations (3 hours)
The practice and techniques of teaching the sun salutation series, ranging from the classical presentations with mantra, through specialized series used in Ashtanga Yoga, through the basic Hatha Yoga traditions and other variations.

HY204 Advanced Pranayama Techniques (6 hours)
The major pranayama practices, including the cooling breaths, bhastrika, bhramari, kapalbhati, and ujjayi pranayama; introduction to swara yoga, the classical yogic study of the flow of the breath. Prerequisite: Yoga Fundamentals YF104 Introduction to Pranayama and Breath.

HY205 Asanas: Advanced Seated Postures (3 hours)
Techniques and teaching considerations of the advanced seated postures, including advanced spinal twists; padmasana (lotus pose) and the asanas performed in and from padmasana; how to teach and practice padmasana safely. Prerequisite: Yoga Fundamentals YF105 Asanas: Seated Postures.

HY206 Asanas: Advanced Standing Postures (3 hours)
Techniques, benefits, contraindications, and teaching considerations of the advanced standing postures, including revolved standing postures, squatting postures, advanced balancing postures, and standing spinal twists. Prerequisite: Yoga Fundamentals YF106 Asanas: Standing Postures.

HY207 Asanas: Advanced Forward Bending Postures (3 hours)
Techniques, benefits, contraindications, and teaching considerations of the advanced forward bending postures, including dynamic forward bends, half-lotus locks, and variations of advanced reclining, standing, and seated forward bends. Prerequisite: Yoga Fundamentals YF107 Asanas: Forward Bending Postures.

HY208 Asanas: Advanced Back Bending Postures (3 hours)
Techniques, benefits, contraindications, and teaching considerations of the advanced back bending postures, including advanced variations of cobra, locust, and bow pose, as well as wheel pose and bridge pose. Prerequisite: Yoga Fundamentals YF108 Asanas: Back Bending Postures.

HY209 Asanas: Advanced Inverted Postures (3 hours)
Techniques, benefits, contraindications, and teaching considerations of the advanced inverted postures, including handstands and headstands, and the variations of the headstand series. Prerequisite: Yoga Fundamentals YF109 Asanas: Inverted Postures.

HY210 Asanas: Modifications (6 hours)
Considerations and techniques for modifying asanas (postures) for beginners, students with injuries, and mixed level classes, including general guidelines for implementing modifications. Prerequisite: Yoga Fundamentals YF105, YF106, YF107, YF108, YF109 Asana Series.

HY211 Restorative Yoga Techniques (3 hours)
Use of props and blankets in supportive postures to promote gentle stretching, healing and relaxation.

HY212 Cleansing Practices: The Shatkarmas (3 hours)
Classical cleansing and purification practices in Hatha Yoga. Overview of techniques with practical instruction in jala neti, tratakam, and kapalbhati.

HY213 Meditation Techniques (3 hours)
Basic techniques in meditation, including breath meditation, sound meditation, and visualization. Prerequisite: Yoga Fundamentals YF113 Introduction to Meditation.

HY214 Yoga Therapy: Back Care Basics (3 hours)
Supportive postures for back problems; basic yoga sets and exercises for strengthening the back; precautions for dealing with back injuries; modifications for students with back injuries.

HY215 Yoga Therapy: Reading the Body (3 hours)
Use of postural analysis and basic asanas to determine a student's flexibility and areas of the body that may need special attention.

HY216 Anatomy of Movement (6 hours)
The anatomy of movement as it relates to the practice of asanas (postures).

HY217 The Flow and Balance of Asana Practice (6 hours)
How to sequence postures (asanas) to create a flow and balanced experience in a Hatha Yoga class. Prerequisite: Yoga Fundamentals YF105, YF106, YF107, YF108, YF109 Asana Series.

HY218 Hatha Yoga Pradipika (5 hours)
Reading, studying, and practicing classical yoga techniques as presented in one of the major written works on Hatha Yoga.

HY219 Hatha Yoga Class Structure (5 hours)
Considerations and techniques in the structure of a Hatha Yoga class. Includes checking in with students, warm-ups, breathing, asanas, relaxation, and meditation.

HY220 Teaching Hatha Yoga to Beginners (10 hours)
Practical considerations for teaching Hatha Yoga to beginners, including suggested teaching sequences, modifications, mixed levels, and practice teaching.

HY221 Hatha Yoga Group Teaching (6 hours)
Teaching and observing Hatha Yoga classes taught by teacher trainees under the supervision of a Registered Yoga Teacher.

HY222 Independent Teaching Level 1 (4 hours)
Teaching yoga classes independently under the observation of a Registered Yoga Teacher.

HY223 Developing a Personal Practice (5 hours)
Design and development of a Hatha Yoga practice at home.

HY224 Yoga Teacher Certification Examination (3 hours)
Comprehensive examination of all course material.

HY230 Advanced Asana Practice: Opening the Shoulders (2 hours)
Exploration of exercises, asanas and supported poses which help to expand the flexibility of the shoulder girdle, upper back, neck and upper chest.

HY231 Advanced Asana Practice: Opening the Hips (2 hours)
Exploration of exercises, asanas and supported poses which encourage deeper levels of flexibility in the hip joints, lower and mid back, and the upper thigh.

HY235 Hatha Sequencing Basics (3 hours)
Introduction to the art of sequencing as it applies to life and personal yoga practice; focus on combination of postures to achieve specific goals.

HY299 Special Topics in Yoga
This course may serve as a make-up course for the 200 hour certification program in Hatha Yoga. Please contact a member of the Teacher Training staff to discuss whether this class will be appropriate to make up for other classes that were missed.
