Ivy is a certified Ayurvedic health practitioner and has been teaching yoga and meditation since 2002. She is particularly interested in yoga as a practice that can help us find and maintain balance and inspiration in our busy lives. She has completed two 200-hour yoga teacher training programs, one at Integrative Yoga Therapy and another at Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. The heart-centered teachings of Swami Kripalu continue to inspire her practice. She also received specialized training to teach yoga to people with cancer and cardiac conditions.

Her desire to support people in healing led her to Ayurveda, India’s traditional system of health and medicine and a sister-science to yoga. Her primary teacher is Dr. Vasant Lad in New Mexico, with whom she trained as an Ayurvedic practitioner. She also lived and studied Ayurveda in South India for six months. Her training included the practice of yoga according to Ayurvedic principles. Here in Austin, she teaches Ayurveda workshops and provides individual Ayurvedic consultations at the Yoga Yoga 360 Spa. Find out more about Ivy's Ayurvedic consultations that are available through our Spa.

Ivy’s yoga classes are introspective, meditative practices designed to help students reconnect with their center – the inner teacher – and to emerge feeling more at ease in the body and the psyche. Her encouraging, calming presence creates an atmosphere of safety and exploration. Weaving in poems, readings and other imagery, her classes provide a multi-faceted rejuvenating experience.

Ivy considers each class through the lens of Ayurveda, choosing postures, sequences, and breathing practices to offset the potentially unbalancing influences in the current weather, season or time of day. In her Hatha Flow classes, the emphasis is on making each movement mindful, infusing each transition with wide-eyed awareness. The flow is guided as an opportunity to expand our connection to the body and its nuances, not to miss out on subtle sensations.

Ivy also teaches with Community Yoga Austin, sharing yoga with individuals who can't otherwise easily practice yoga. Previously, she taught yoga at a Harvard hospital, a cancer treatment center, and in the prison system. A dedicated student of Sanskrit and Vedic chant, she is fascinated by the power of sound, stories and the spoken word in healing. She is a professional level member of the National Ayurvedic Medicine Association and the International Association of Yoga Therapists. She has a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Boston College, a bachelor’s degree in literature from Brown University, and a life-long commitment to helping people find their own path to health and joy.

The ultimate goal of Ivy’s teaching is to open the doors of awareness to our inner experience, for it is awareness that holds the key to healing and to finding the quiet joy of contentment in our present lives.
