Colleen has been teaching since 1994, and in her training she has explored various lineages of the practice. Her original certification was in Hatha Yoga in the early 1990s, and currently teaches both Hatha and Kundalini classes. She has studied with Jon Friend, Eric Schiffman, Rodney Yee, Sandra Andersen, and Gary Kraftsow, as well as completing Yoga Yoga Teacher Training. Colleen plays the gong, and is certified with the KRI as a Kundalini Yoga Teacher.
Students in Colleen's Kundalini classes can expect class to begin with a brief meditation on why we are here and where we want to go, creating a focused intention for the practice. Adi Mantra opens the class, followed by Kundalini warm-up exercises. A complete Kundalini movement and meditation set, and a finishing meditation make up the core of the class, and students can look forward to hearing and feeling the gong during final relaxation.
Colleen's Hatha Yoga classes are an opportunity to tone, flex, open, and stretch the physical body. These classes are moderately paced and focused on moving with the breath while building concentration and practicing proper alignment. Sometimes class will include a meditation as well. Colleen always ends her class with a 7-10 minute relaxation. Both of Colleen's practices stay fresh and interesting due to the constant new discoveries she makes. In Hatha, exploring postures on the inner planes and hearing new perspectives keeps the practice real and relevant. For Kundalini, discovering new kriyas (exercise sets), meditations and reading material keeps Colleen learning and eager to share with her students.
Her first experiences with yoga were powerful and transformative, and Colleen draws on them still in her teaching. Hatha opened up her body and increased her physical grace. Her first Kundalini class expanded her conscious awareness. When she stepped outside afterward, everything in sight seemed to be vibrating. “It was exhilarating!” she recalls.
Colleen is inspired in her practice by Mehtab and Snatam Kaur. John Friend's Universal Principals of Alignment are a persistent influence and reference. Colleen supports her yoga practice with flower essences that she creates in her work as a holistic health practitioner. She is also a graduate and soon to be teacher of Avatar, an experiential path of study on how consciousness creates reality. Avatar is also a world peace movement that offers techniques for life improvement and insight into conscious awareness.
Colleen has lived in Austin since the early 1980s. She is happily married, and has one daughter, two birds and one cat. In addition to her work in holistic health and yoga, Colleen also writes children's books.
