Charlie was practicing Bikram yoga every day for two years when he stumbled into Kundalini. After two months of this practice, a high contrast to Bikram, he knew he wanted to teach. The Anusara method, which combines spiritual endeavor with physical work, was a perfect mix. Today, teaching keeps Charlie engaged in yoga. In his Hatha Star classes, students who are new to yoga will get to experience the physical work of Hatha postures. But Charlie also emphasizes the ways that yoga works in our lives beyond the mat. "We must ground our spirituality in real life."
Charlie was born in Newport, Monmouthshire, South Wales. He moved to Austin in 1991. Since deciding to become a yoga teacher, Charlie has trained under many different instructors, beginning with Yoga Yoga's 200-hour Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training in 2002. After that, Charlie continued his studies with the 200 and 500-hour Hatha Yoga Teacher Training at Yoga Yoga, which he completed in 2004. In addition to Hatha Yoga training, he has studied with Anusara-certified teachers Charly Pivert and Christina Sell, as well as John Friend, the founder of the Anusara system. After working with local and nationally renowned teachers, Charlie still considers his early work with Anusara inspired teacher Mary Keator as one of the strongest influences on his practice. His inspiration to continue teaching and practicing comes from the challenges of the physical practice and mental discipline, and "the way the study of yoga makes everyday life easier."
Outside of the studio Charlie enjoys photography, music, movies, swimming at Deep Eddy Pool, and reading the New Yorker.
