Viniyoga
Therapy for Physiological Conditions
Monday, August 18th
9am - 5:30pm (lunch 12:30-2pm)
Learn
the yoga therapy perspective, means and methods for working with chronic
illness including: assessment, goals, treatment strategy and application.
Special attention will be given to two conditions: (1) Sleeplessness and
Insomnia and (2) Auto Immune Conditions including Fibromyalgia.
Insomnia
and sleeplessness are two of the most common and troubling symptoms of
chronic physiologically-based conditions. The stress and strain of daily
life, changing emotional landscapes, diet, environmental toxicity and
hereditary tendencies can all contribute to the development and exacerbation
of many different conditions which produce similar symptoms. In addition,
as we age, the length and quality of our sleep can also be significantly
affected. Students will explore the theory, principle and practices of
Yoga Therapy to address insomnia and sleeplessness, both age-related and
as the result of different chronic conditions.
Fibromyalgia
is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain in muscles, ligaments
and tendons, as well as fatigue and multiple tender points - places on
the body where slight pressure causes pain. Students will learn to apply
the principles and practices of yoga therapy to help individuals suffering
from these related but different auto-immune conditions to reduce pain,
manage their symptoms, improve function and feel better about themselves.

Viniyoga
Therapy for Psychological Conditions
Tuesday, August 19th
9am - 5:30pm (lunch 12:30-2pm)
Every year adult Americans with psychological disorders, including anxiety
and depression, cumulatively miss 1.3 billion days of work, school, or
other daily activity. Some of the many symptoms of these conditions include
restlessness, fatigue, irritability, impatience, being easily distracted,
shortness of breath, trouble sleeping, impaired thinking or concentration,
loss of interest in normal activities and depressed mood.
In
addition to these cognitive, affective and behavioral symptoms, modern
science is beginning to confirm what the ancient yogis have known for
thousands of years: troubling emotional states have a direct relationship
to disease in the body.
On
Tuesday, Gary will present the theory of Yoga Therapy as it pertains to
psychologically-based conditions, and apply those principles in specific
practices for anxiety and depression.
