January Student of the Month: Joy

Joy Blythe

1. Tell us about the first yoga class you remember. Did you like it?
Being 7 years ago, I am not certain...but I would guess it may have been Pamela's Hatha Flow, 4:30 pm class, and I liked it so much that I made it a part of my regular Monday routine, no matter how tired I was. The thing I love most about Pamela's classes is that I feel like I have had a yoga-nap in the yoga-womb, while at the same time am perfectly challenged.

2. What do you like best about Yoga Yoga?
In addition to the high standards and the integrity of the organization, as well as the primo instruction, I would have to say the primary reason I have continued to practice almost exclusively at Yoga Yoga is that I know I can find a class every day that fits into my full schedule, no matter where in town life may have taken me. It is very important to me that I can find a good place to practice.

3. If you could have a Yoga Yoga anywhere, where would it be?
Somewhere central, like the 38 1/2 street area.

4. Who is your current favorite yoga teacher?
Chris P. is my morning preacher, but this month I would have to give my props to our beloved TIM. Thank you, Tim, for all of those spirals, arm balances, groundedness and, most importantly, your sense of humor. You will be missed.

5. Off the mat and in the world, where are you?
I currently work as a substitute teacher for AISD and as a server at the original Kerbey Lane. I also have the privilege to sing with the HildeGirls and I am learning sign language and how to play the ukulele. I am not learning quickly, but I appreciate the challenge and how these activities flavor my life. Mostly, I am just grateful for all the beautiful people in my daily life (which includes the YY staff, who I consider a little like family).

6. What’s your sign?
Sun sign is Aries, Moon sign is Scorpio, Aries rising. I also have an ASL sign-name, which is my J-finger making the happy sign on my chest!

7. What book are you reading right now?
"Secrets of the Teenage Brain" by Sheryl Feinstein

8. What’s the first concert you attended?
The GO-GO's opening for THE POLICE in 1981. Believe it or not, I was there to see the GO-GO's! I went with my mom and I remember her turning to me and whispering that that smell was..."marijuana"!

9. Share a recipe with us!
My current favorite: Morning Go-Green Smoothie = coconut water, raw spinach, celery, parsley, ginger, apple, avocado, carob and stevia. YUMMY.
