Seven (Sat Avtar Singh)
1. Tell us about the first yoga class you remember. Did you like it?
I took an Iyengar class from Karuna Nichols in 1996. I was instantly hooked! Hatha-based yoga is a blessing. But my life really changed when I took my first Kundalini class, from Kewal Kaur at Yoga Yoga South in 1997. Kundalini yoga is a miracle! It has put me in touch with my soul, I'm so thankful for its daily effect on my being.
2. What do you like best about Yoga Yoga?
The quality of the instructors is unparalleled. Also it's great to be able to pick a class to suit your mood, with so many different styles available all the time.
3. If you could have a Yoga Yoga anywhere, where would it be?
It's already there! Yoga Yoga North is a 5-minute walk from my house.
4. Who is your current favorite yoga teacher?
It's so hard to pick just one! For Kundalini, Sahib (Tracy), Mandeep (Jodi), and Sirgun Kaur (Kim). For Vinyasa & Hatha Flow, Jenn W. and Tim.
5. Off the mat and in the world, where are you?
I love to see live music - especially jazz. I also love to go hiking and camping, and play board games with my friends.
6. What’s your sign?
Aries with Virgo rising - so I have to be first, and I have to be organized about it!
7. Who is your favorite Austin character?
Slim Richey - the most dangerous guitarist in Texas! He plays guitar in The Jitterbug Vipers, a jazz band where my cousin Sarah Sharp is the lead singer.
8. What book are you reading right now?
The Dark Beyond the Stars by Frank M. Robinson. It's a gay-themed sci-fi novel, about a generational spaceship crossing the void between two galaxies.
9. What’s the first concert you attended?
My parents met through their love for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. So the first concert I remember was Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.
10. Share a recipe with us!
I'm not much of a cook, I mostly eat out or eat pre-prepared stuff. But I do make a mean batch of home-made ice cream, when the mood strikes in the heat of summer.
Yoga Yoga was founded in Austin by husband and wife Mehtab Benton and Guru Karam, who began teaching out of the extra room in their house. Yoga Yoga opened its first studio doors in 1998 but as we like to say, we've been "locally Om'd" since 1997.
