Therapeutic Yoga for the Pelvic Floor: Heal From The Inside Out with DeLora Frederickson

Friday, February 23 - Monday, February 26
at North

If you’ve been to a yoga class, you’ve  heard about the pelvic floor.  If you’re a woman, you’ve definitely heard about the pelvic floor.  But too few of us truly understand the pelvic floor anatomically or experientially.  The goal of this weekend is to empower students and teachers with a deeper understanding and experience of the pelvic floor.  Whether you have a particular condition, concern or dysfunction (or not), this course will be enlightening!  You’ll learn how the health and proper function of the pelvic floor can directly affect your breathing, nervous system and subtle energy systems.  In eastern thought, our pranic systems are deeply rooted in the region of the pelvic floor, so you can imagine the connection to our subtler practices like meditation.
All levels, all traditions, yoga teachers, yoga practitioners and healthcare professionals alike will benefit from this weekend.

Friday,  February 23
6:00 - 9:00pm
What is the Pelvic Floor Exactly and Why Is It Important?

In this introductory session, we will cover the basics - specifically, what we mean (exactly) when we talk about the pelvic floor and why we are so interested. We will explore the connection between the pelvic floor and your yoga practice. We will look at common pelvic floor problems like incontinence (urinary and fecal), low back pain, and prolapse; discovering how asana and pranayama practice can support your healing.  Inquiry through lecture, discussion, and asana practice will give you the chance to experience the pelvic floor as the foundation of your practice.

Cost $40 ($50 after December 23)

Saturday, February 24
Anatomy of the Pelvic Floor and the Breath connection
10:00am - 1:00pm and 2:00 - 5:00pm

In the morning session,  we will examine  the pelvic floor from both western and eastern traditions. We’ll explore the anatomy and physiology of the pelvic floor in an easy to understand, accessible way, as well as introduce the yogic energetic models of the chakras and koshas. We will cover topics such as learning to distinguish between hypo (lax) and hyper  (tight) active pelvic floors. This clarified anatomical understanding of the pelvic floor combined with the eastern energetic anatomy models will offer us even deeper layers of enquiry .

In the afternoon session, we’ll explore the breath, an integral part of our yoga practices. Simply said, when the pelvic floor is dysfunctional it can restrict or inhibit your breathing. In yoga (as in life) breath is everything.  During this deeply experiential session, you will be guided through a series of exercises to help you experience your pelvic floor in relation to your breath as you learn how to enhance your yoga practice through a new relationship with your breathing, diaphragm and pelvic floor.

Saturday Full Day $95 ($115 after December 23)

Sunday, February 25
10:00am - 1:00pm  and 2:00 - 5:00pm
The Nervous System & The Pelvic Floor

Your nervous system is the headquarters for your entire body, so when your nervous system is out of balance so is your pelvic floor.  This imbalance can lead to all kinds of emotional and physical challenges. By learning to tune in to your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems you can begin to recognize the subtle cues from your deeper self, and develop tools to regulate your internal systems.

The morning and afternoon sessions will focus on the nervous system, how trauma can be “stored” on the pelvic floor, and the very real epidemic of chronic stress and anxiety. Anxiety affects 40 million people in the US alone. Some symptoms that can accompany anxiety often include digestive problems, breathing restrictions, lack of intimacy, and the inability to have pleasure and happiness in your life.
We will present and practice proven techniques to release anxiety and to relax and tone the pelvic floor. Using these techniques you will build an anxiety busting tool kit to take with you wherever you go.

Sunday Full Day $95 ($115 after December 23)

Monday February 26
11:00am - 4:00pm
The Pelvic Floor for Teachers

This special session will focus on working with students one-on-one who experience pelvic floor problems. First we will look at asanas and how pelvic floor laxity or tension can affect alignment, preventing students from the full benefits of their practice. We will also delve deeper into how trauma lives in the pelvic floor, wellness practices for the pelvic floor, and sequencing for the pelvic floor. You will then practice using and teaching these techniques.

Cost $85 ($95 after December 23)

WEEKEND ONLY:  $195 ($245 after Dec 23)

FULL PROGRAM: $275 ($325 after December 23)

DELORA FREDRICKSON

DeLora is a Certified Yoga Therapist specializing in the pelvic floor.  Teaching yoga for over 10 years, she has found pelvic floor problems to be rampant in our culture for women and men.

Many students have alignment issues, incontinence, pelvic pain, and  other pelvic floor issues that they bring onto the mat.

After studying with Leslie Howard, DeLora has made the pelvic floor the foundation of her teachings.  Knowing this area of the body is still taboo to talk about in public DeLora creates a comfortable and safe space to do this important work.  She is funny and knowledgeable making her classes accessible to non yoga practitioners, beginners as well as well seasoned practitioners.
