The practice of Yoga and Astrology (Jyotish) has been linked together for hundreds of years. In this column we will look at the month ahead astrologically and see what we can learn about our yoga practices, life choices, and how to align and connect ourselves to the cosmic cycles.
This monthly column uses the science of Vedic Astrology (which differs from Western astrology in reckoning the sign position of the planets) as it gives the best results for people on a yogic or spiritual journey. The highlights below reflect the Vedic Astrology sign positions for this month.

This month:
The Taurus Sun Person
If you were born between May 14 to June 14, you are a Taurus Sun according to Vedic Astrology. Taurus is ruled by the planet Venus which makes these people sensual, loving beauty both in things generally and the environment in particular. They are very "down to earth": practical people. These people are dependable, have ambition and can work steadily in their time to achieve their goals. They are very strong willed and can be extremely stubborn at times. Making them angry will never get them to concede, so it's wise to be kind and patient. These people are fairly analytical and don't rush into things without thinking. They have high intelligence, patience and believe in themselves and their abilities. They can be very talented in business and usually marry well. They enjoy food and may have musical talents.
The Taurus Yogi
The Taurus Sun Yogi is practical, stable, resourceful, reliable, and patient and they may enjoy a methodical, slow pragmatic approach to yoga. They can also be obstinate, so may need to watch for an unwillingness to change their practice and not following directions. Alas, they also may have a tendency to laziness so it may be hard to get them moving. The good news? Once they get going, they will go the distance and can stick with a routine. They can commit to a practice and be very reliable once they start a yoga program or training. Just don't make them too uncomfortable in class and practice in beautiful surroundings if you want a happy Taurus yogi.
Hurry Up And Change!
An unusual month ahead as every planet except Saturn is entering into a new sign. Of course the Moon enters a new sign every 2 to 3 days and the Sun does this every month, but this month Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Mars, as well as the two Vedic planets of karma, Rahu and Ketu go into a new sign.
Whenever a planet enters a new sign, the quality of its energy changes to affect everyone and its particular influence in an individual's life over a certain area of concern also changes. The change may even be more apparent this month as we will have five planets in the impulsive sign of Aries for a few days before the middle of the month.
Expect a great leap, even if somewhat undirected, as several areas of your life become charged up with this new energy. A Vedic astrologer can clue you in on how this dynamic month may affect your personally, but here are some things all of us might expect over the next few weeks!
Mars Charges
With Mars moving out of dreamy Pisces into fiery Aries, you will move faster and tap into high energy. Watch out for the head-butting and argumentative nature of Mars now – realize that pushing ahead may get you there but is that really where you wanted to go?
Venus Asserts
With Venus joining Mars in Aries, expect romantically assertive partners and, frankly, hot sex. New affairs may burn bright and then vanish after a single night. If you got a steady, get ready. And if you want to conquer, or be conquered, strap on the lance and do your dance of love.
Mercury Moves
Mercury in Aries promises fast talking, quick short trips, and making the deals. If you can just keep your brain one-step ahead of your mouth, all will be well.
Jupiter Jumps
Jupiter is in Aries for all of the next year. This brings a benefic influence to all this Arian energy and is great for new beginnings in the area of spirituality. You may find yourself drawn to a new practice or path, starting a new career like becoming a teacher and particularly a yoga teacher. Depending upon where Aries is located in your birth chart, you can expect the usual good fortune and help that Jupiter brings into each area of your life. For people with the Vedic sign of Cancer rising, their career will prosper and expand. Sagittarius rising will have great luck with creative projects (or children), and Leo rising will enjoy good fortune in all areas.
Rahu and Ketu: Serious Business
Now for the next 18 months we will all encounter the new influences of Rahu (future karma) and Ketu (past karma) as they move into the signs of Scorpio and Taurus respectively. Expect a lot of energy along the axis of materiality and spirituality. As these planets provide us with the greatest opportunities for spiritual growth, we will focus next month on what we can do with this new energy.
NEXT MONTH: Summer Solstice plus a Lunar and Solar Eclipse. And an update on our karmic pals, Rahu and Ketu. Don't miss it!
