Yoga @ Your Desk

How many hours a day do you spend at a desk typing, writing or behind the wheel of a car? Over time, the pull of gravity and alignment of this posture causes the shoulders to hunch over and stores tension in the upper back. Taking a minute or two to do this simple exercise can do wonders to ease tension in the shoulders and neck as well as restore energy and improve your focus throughout the day.

Daily Yoga: Wall Clocks

  • Begin by standing perpendicular to the wall with your right shoulder 6 inches away from the wall
  • Raise your right arm up so your palm touches the wall above your head. Imagine your arm as the hour hand on a clock - starting at 12 o'clock.
  • Take a deep inhale and count the length of your breath up to somewhere around 4-6. Then release the breath for the same duration, timing as you exhale with the same length count.
  • Now lower your right hand behind you to the 1 o'clock position and take another deep inhale and exhale, counting the length of your breath. Repeat the movement for 2 o'clock and breathe.
  • Lower your hand to 3 o'clock and pause. Take another deep breath, counting your inhale and exhale. Now work your arm back up the wall, moving to 2 o'clock, then 1 o'clock, then 12 o'clock, taking a deep inhale and exhale at each stop.
  • When you finish the right side, release your arm down to your side and pause. You will be able to feel the openness on your right side and relaxed quality in your shoulder.
  • Turn around and repeat the exercise on the left side. Your mind and body will be glad you did!

Relieve Stress with Restorative Yoga

Deadlines at work, the demands of parenting, bumper-to-bumper traffic - stress often comes from many directions at once and can produce physical, mental, as well as emotional symptoms. Studies indicate that 3 out of 5 visits to the doctor today are stress related.

Restorative Yoga classes are especially designed to alleviate stress. The postures are usually deeply supported by blankets, blocks, or other props and are held for several minutes at a time. They focus on relaxation and calming the central nervous system and have a particular ability to leave us nourished and well rested. Perfect for beginners and veterans alike, restorative classes are ideal for those going through stressful times, suffering from illness, injury or major life changes.

Yoga Yoga offers several restorative classes every week at all of our four studios. We encourage you to try a restorative class and discover the wealth of benefits from this nurturing practice.
