Optimal
Health with Gary Kraftsow
August 15-19 at Yoga Yoga Westgate
Gary
Kraftsow has been a pioneer in the transmission of yoga for health,
healing and personal transformation for 30 years. He is the founder
and director of the American Viniyoga Institute. The style of
yoga called Viniyoga (meaning "yoga therapy") is unique
in that it adapts the practice of yoga to an individual's specific
needs.
The
Optimal
Health Weekend, August 15 - 17, will explore how yoga can
help a person achieve their full potential. Participants will learn
how to create integrated yoga practices adapted to their unique
needs and interests and relevant to their daily lives.
Gary
will also be presenting Viniyoga
Therapy weekday clinics, August 18 - 19, dealing with insomnia,
fibromyalgia and psychological conditions such as anxiety and depression.

Ready
to Invest in a Yoga Mat?
Here's how to choose the right
one for you.
You've
been practicing yoga for a while now, and you might be ready to
invest in a yoga mat of your own. But which one is the right mat
for you? Here's the scoop on Yoga Yoga's mat selection.
Basic
sticky mat
Yoga
Yoga sells a basic, eco- friendly yoga mat, similar to the ones
we rent. These mats are inexpensive and come in a series of bright
colors.
Some
students find the surface looses its grip. We recommend the ancient
yogic tradition of sponging down the mat with a solution of one
part water, one part white wine vinegar to improve traction. Hang
to dry.

Jade
mats
The Jade line is a higher end product, like the BMW of yoga mats.
Yoga Yoga carries three Jade designs: Travel, Harmony, and Fusion,
each one thicker than the last. Jade mats are made of open-cell
natural rubber. They don't ever lose their grip with time, wear,
or moisture. Jade mats are very popular with Flow and Ashtanga students,
who need extra grip when the class gets underway and they start
to sweat.
Manduka
If
Jade was the BMW of yoga mats, then the Manduka "high performance"
line is the Lear Jet. This is the only mat Yoga Yoga carries that
comes in an extra long (85 inches). The famous "Black Mat"
is popular with long time students who like a lot of cushioning.
The heavy rubber will stay put on the floor, and your hands will
stay put on its grippy surface. You can leave it in the car or in
the sun without fear, and hose it down periodically with mild soap
and water to clean. If you only want to buy one mat, or you want
the extra length, you can't do much better than the Manduka.

You'll
see some students use a rug or towel in class. Yoga Yoga also has
a selection of specially designed coverings for your mat, and bags
for easy transport. Ask a staff member for details.

In
this issue of Yoga @ Work:
|
Try
a few of these chair twists to unwind between tasks. A simple spinal
twist every day helps to keep your middle and upper body loose and
relaxed.
|
Chair
Twists
Sit on the edge
of your chair, sideways with your left side facing the chair
back.
Throughout
the pose, keep your feet and knees together and even.
Place your
hands on the chair as shown.
Inhale while
straightening your spine. As you exhale, twist toward the
back of the chair, twisting from the very bottom of your spine
-- pushing gently with your left hand and pulling lightly
with your right hand.
Repeat the
inhalation/straighten, exhalation/twist series several times.
Release and
switch sides.
To
deepen the twist, try moving to the center of the chair

The
Biology Behind Our Business
Earlier
this month, Healthday News reported that there has been
significant progress in the quest to understand the biological
effects of meditation and yoga. Doctors and scientists have long
observed that guided relaxation can be used to treat chronic symptoms,
and even heal some health conditions. These latest findings pinpoint
some of the molecular biology behind that profound phenomenon.
The new studies discussed in the article also indicate that even
brand new yoga practitioners are changing their minds at the cellular
level.
Finally,
hard science in lay terms to explain the calm in the face of calamity
that we call The Yogic Edge! Yoga Yoga's managing partner Rich
(Raghurai) Goldstein has a blog
on the topic.

Yoga
Yoga Private Instruction
Yoga
Yoga offers private yoga classes with our teachers. Students can
make a single appointment or schedule a series of private sessions
to work on the aspects of yoga that challenge and interest them.
Are the classes you love rather large? If you want more time with
the teacher, a private lesson is a great way to check in. You will
get personal direction, support for your personal needs and limitations,
and learn how to stay safe in your practice.
To
schedule a private yoga session, contact Tori at privates@yogayoga.com
or click here
to fill out our online form.
