Zoe's Birth Story by Maureen
Born September 13
8lbs 1.5 oz, 20.75"

On Friday, September 12, our due date, on the way out to a celebratory 'date nite' at Mandola's, my water broke, conveniently in the parking lot just as we were getting out of the car. We hopped back in, me sitting on a sheet normally reserved to keep our car clean of dog hair, missing our last meal as a couple, but looking forward (and quite giddy) to the adventure on its way.

Elias' birth story by Sandy
Born September 19

I thought I'd share my story with everybody and hopefully, share some encouragement! I was due September 12th. Alice may remember me in class two times AFTER that date!

It was a long, hard wait, but Thursday morning (4am) September 18th, the little guy decided to start to make an appearance. I woke up with contractions about 10 min apart- went back to sleep for a couple of hours, then woke up for good around 7.

All day long, I was in denial that this was really true labor. I didn't want to get my hopes up! By 3 pm, I was noticing that the contractions were regularly coming every 5-10 minutes, so maybe this really was it (they had been happening for 12 hours now)!

I was determined to do this birth drug free...click here to read the rest!

I am Super Mom!

There was a new mom and baby in my postnatal class this Tuesday that hit me with this mantra. This mom's baby was being a bit fussy, so she swaddled baby and laid her down on the blanket. She was sleeping so peacefully and looked so cozy. I complimented mama on knowing just what her baby needed, and remarked at how beautifully she slept. Mama then told me her baby really isn't a good sleeper, and it's times like this she “feels like Super Mom.”

Meditation to Welcome Change

Pregnancy is change. Labor, delivery and becoming a mother is the very essence of change. Ideally, you could welcome every change in your body and lifestyle with open arms. In reality, these changes can seem overwhelming.

Use this meditation to help you turn toward these feelings with an honest and open mind, with the intention to love yourself and love the body that is now supporting a new life through these necessary changes. Respect the effort you are making to don this new mantle of motherhood can make your transition easier.

Deep Twist - Jathara Parivrtti

This might be the first comfortable twist you have done since becoming pregnant! What a great posture to welcome you back to moving your spine in this way. This pose tones your abdominal muscles, uterus, oblique muscles, and lower back muscles as well as stretching your outer hips, intercostals, and shoulder girdle.

The action of twisting and releasing (especially when paired with mindful breathing) is like the action of wringing out a sponge: it squeezes your internal organs and then flushes them with fresh blood when the pose is released. Also, this pose is excellent for stimulating the intestines and is therefore great for stimulating digestion and relieving constipation.

Click here for step by step instructions.

Shoulder Stretch - Pavanmuktasana

Birth is often seen by first time pregnant women (and those who have been through it before) as a great unknown. It's very normal to feel apprehension, anxiety, and even fear as birth approaches. In response, we may guard the front of the body (the heart in particular) when faced with the challenge of this unknown.

This pose expands the chest and stretches the shoulders while strengthening the muscles of the back. It can be a powerful aid in releasing fear and anxiety as well as stretching our shoulders and chest for deeper breathing.

*This chest and shoulder opener is one to remember for after your baby is born (when you will be doing lots of leaning over and carrying and feeding), too!
