Birth Stories by Yoga Yoga students
Ainsley's birth story by Skyla
Born on February 2, 2009

On February 2nd I gave birth to my second daughter. The only similar thing between the two birthing experiences was we had chosen to not find out if we were having a boy or girl. This time it was a completely different experience than with the first, but equally as special.

With the first, I progressed through labor pretty fast. I arrived at the hospital three hours after contractions started, was already 7 cm, and they broke my water at the hospital. I did not have my mind set on pain medication, but was glad I got the epidural with my first daughter because I had to push for two and a half hours.

This time I delivered my baby girl 15 minutes after getting to the hospital! Needless to say, there was no time for drugs. However, thirty minutes after each delivery I said I would definitely do it again. It's a beautiful thing and absolutely amazing that your body takes over and does what it needs to do.

Mama Mantras by Jess G
I Can See Myself!

My bathroom mirror is covered in little hand prints. This is because my 3 ½ year-old, Nate, likes to draw in the steam while I take a shower. Fine by me, so long as I get a 10-minute break from “20 questions.” Once I'm out of the shower, however, and ready to comb my hair and put on makeup, it's not as cute. I really can't see myself at all. I have to clean a spot away in order to see. Well, it's not just our bathroom mirrors that need polishing.

Can you still see yourself? You are Mama (or Mommy, or Mom, etc.) first and foremost. It is probably the biggest part of who you are. You may also be a wife, partner, friend, sister, daughter, daughter-in-law, and aunt. You wear more hats than the Village People! It is easy to get so covered up in these costumes and roles that you can no longer see the carefree woman inside.

Mothering Meditation
Creating Space by Ravyn A

Students meditating in Prenatal Yoga class at Yoga YogaYou don't have to be an expert to practice meditation. As a mother, whether you are pregnant or have a new baby, taking just a few moments in any day to connect (to your self and your growing baby) is a beautiful and healthy practice.

This month's meditation is on "space". During pregnancy and motherhood there is a great need for spaciousness. Your body has make space to accommodate this new life while your baby grows inside you. Your life has to make space to accommodate the new addition to your family after your baby is born. Added to this is need to make space for yourself amidst all the demands you are met with as a mother. If you can manage to carve out a few moments to create space for yourself and your own needs to be met, you will surely have more energy and happiness to share with your new baby and new life.

Did you know that your estimated due date, or "EDD", is really just that-an estimate? While 90% of babies are born within 2 weeks of their due date, a mere 10% are actually born on their exact due date.

So, there is nothing magical about the due date and no reason to panic if your baby doesn't make her appearance on this exact day. Due dates are calculated by adding 280 days to the first day of your last menstrual period.
