The Yoga Yoga Philosophy
Yoga Yoga always had a life and direction of its own because it was driven by
a simplistic and pure vision – make it possible for more people, for all
people, to do yoga.
When we started Yoga Yoga, it was still a revolutionary idea to offer several
styles of yoga in the same studio. There were Iyengar Yoga studios, there were
Bikram Yoga studios, there were Kundalini Yoga studios, but we wanted a Yoga
Yoga studio where all traditions were embraced and practiced. Our personal experience
of all the types of yoga gave us an appreciation for the beauty and gifts of
each one and how they attracted diverse groups of people.
We wanted diversity and at the same time, we insisted on integrity. Only yoga
would be taught in the studios. Only trained and certified yoga teachers would
teach. All traditions and teachers would be welcome, and they would be allowed
to teach from their hearts and from their experiences without homogenizing their
vast experience of what yoga is.
Unlike in the past where the teacher was the center of a studio that attracted
students, we wanted a yoga environment where the student was the focus that attracted
the teachers. A student at Yoga Yoga has the choice of many teachers, even on
the same day and at the same time. The idea is to connect the student to the
teachings, and not to one teacher. Our other goal was to serve everyone who came
in the spirit of yoga.
Yoga: Service in Action
In yoga the word “seva” means selfless service. It is karma yoga,
the yoga of action. While we practice yoga to make ourselves better, our real
goal is to make the world better. Yoga is a way to self-elevate so you can elevate
others.
From the very beginning and today, Yoga Yoga has supported the Austin community
through donation of yoga classes to non-profit organizations, gathering of food,
clothing, and toys for families and children in need, participation in fund-raising
events for those with cancer, AIDS, and other life-threatening diseases, and
volunteer work in women’s shelters and in cleaning up the environment.
Our teachers have given their time freely in service, and part of our teacher
training course is to make volunteer opportunities available to those who are
learning to teach yoga.
We knew from our own yoga practice that when you begin to change yourself, you
change the world. As yoga gave so much to us, we knew that now we had to find
a way to give back to yoga. The best way we could think of to serve was to make
yoga available to everyone who came.
“ Do your work in the peace of Yoga
and, free from selfish desires be not
moved in success or failure.
Yoga is evenness of mind –
a peace that is ever the same.”
– Bhagavad-Gita
