Hatha Flow

Hatha Flow and Vinyasa

Yoga teacher in Urdva Hastasana

What is Hatha Flow?

Hatha Flow links the postures practiced in a regular Hatha class into a sequence of movements that "flow" with the breath in a more vigorous series. Hatha Flow involves moving from one posture to another with very little rest in between and creates a strong cardiovascular workout.

Variations on the Sun Salutation are often used as a warm-up, followed by a standing sequence, balancing poses, and then seated poses. As in all Hatha classes, relaxation (savasana) ends the class. Hatha Flow is recommended for students who have practiced Hatha Yoga and are interested in exploring a more movement-oriented class. Hatha Flow builds strength, endurance, and a strong focus. The classroom is not heated, but the physical practice will naturally build heat in the body.

Who Can Practice Hatha Flow? Hatha Flow classes are best suited for students who:
  • Have practiced Hatha Yoga for at least one month
  • Are familiar with Sun Salutations
  • Have practiced inversion postures (such as headstand or shoulder stand) or are willing to try inversions
  • Seek a stronger physical workout in their yoga practice

Vinyasa classes use a vigorous flow of postures designed to warm the body, and build stamina, strength and flexibility. Students should expect to move continuously throughout the entire class. Vinyasa practice produces an internal heat that tones the muscles and purifies the body. Students are encouraged to move at their own pace and must bring their own mat and towel. Students should be familiar with basic yoga poses before attending a Vinyasa class

Who Can Practice Vinyasa? Vinyasa classes are best suited for students who:

  • Have practiced Hatha Flow for at least one month
  • Have a desire to learn and practice more challenging Hatha Yoga postures, though modifications are always offered.
  • Enjoy breath led and breath centered movement
  • Like a little sweat!

Candlelight Flow

Candlelight Flow is a Hatha Flow practice led in a room softly lit by candlelight and accompanied by music. This practice emphasizes meditative, breath-led movement and encourages a strong inward focus. The practice ends with time for restorative yoga, soothing postures held for longer periods of time and finally an extended final relaxation, leaving you balanced, relaxed and ready for a good night’s sleep.
